What is Doc M?

‘Doc M’ is an abbreviation for the term ‘Approved Document M’. This is a document approved and issued by the Secretary of State, ‘with the purpose of providing practical guidance with respect to the requirements of the Building Regulations to ensure access and inclusion for all. This covers a multitude of different specifications but in this case we are just focusing on Part ‘M’ relating to toileting facilities.

The requirements are very specific for example:

  • Toilet (pan) must have a specific height of 460mm (without ring seat)
  • Toilet projection (from wall) must be 750mm
  • The flush must be operated by a spatula lever handle. Push button options do not conform and must not be used
  • A ‘Ring’ seat must be used. Seats & covers do not confirm
  • The room layout is dimensionally specific
